With a re-dedication of our efforts, Chris
and I cast off the name Mellow Star. We picked up the temporary name
of Halfway There, figuring we were halfway to to a full band.
New Years Eve, 2001, we had a friend
record several songs while we goofed around. I have affectionately
named those "The Living Room Recordings Take III." They were more for
ourselves, and I think very few people ever heard these tapes.
The highlight of this time was recording
"The New Guys Marching" with friends Justin and Joe Schneider. The New
Guys were morning DJs at local alternative radio station 101.5. The
Schneider boys didn't care for them too much and wrote this hilarious
tune.
We recorded it and sent it in to the
afternoon DJ, John Holmberg (who didn't care for them either). To our
surprise, the New Guys actually played the tune on the air, and
Holmberg did as well. We were invited into the studio during the
afternoon and played the song live for all of Phoenix. We also
recorded an a cappella intro for "The John Holmberg Show" that he used
occasionally until he left the station.
Joe eventually joined the band as bass
guitarist around the same time we decided on the name Fighting
Goliath. We began searching for a drummer, and Chris and I began
working out the songs. We did record a few temp tracks, a collection I
titled, "The Living Room Recordings Take IV." (Are we seeing a
pattern?)
This session contains a lot of sub-par
performances. Most songs were recorded as solos by the song writer,
either Chris or myself. The ones we recorded together were pretty low
energy. That's why you'll never actually hear these recordings!
The band never got off the ground, and
when I got married I wanted to take a break. Chris, however, was just
getting a divorce and didn't want to waste a minute. I left the band
at that time.
...
Fighting Goliath was joined by other
musicians, played a few shows, and recorded a demo. I have no idea
what the current status of the band is, but their website is still
hosted here.
