After a two year musical hiatus, the
members of Next Best Thing reunited. We had a desire to move beyond
and transcend the music we wrote three and a half years earlier, hence
the name change. Mellow Star was a "last ditch effort" name, one we
liked some days and didn't others.
Mellow Star met with challenges
continually. We were comprised of all four original members,
Chris, Steve, John, and myself. Matt Bachrach also joined the band for
a short time as keyboardist and he also lent his talents as hand
percussionist for several acoustic performances.
Everyone had distracting personal issues
or other projects that demanded their efforts, leaving both myself and
Chris to interview other band members. Ultimately, Mellow Star ended
up being a duo between Chris and I. We wrote some of our favorite
songs during this time, and were welcomed with a consistent crowd of
friends and supporters at acoustic concerts and open-mic nights.
Mellow Star's final noteworthy effort was
a second round of low grade, two person demos cleverly titled, "The
Living Room Recordings: Take II." This tape was given extremely low
circulation, as it was always intended to be followed with a full
demo. But it was never recorded.
Those recordings have been digitized and
mastered to eliminate as much tape hiss as possible. Enjoy.
